Session 1
Words 'n Woods
Junior Grade, Upper Elementary (ages 5-10)
Saturdays: Feb 18th, 25th
March 18th,25th
1pm-2:30pm

In this workshop we will investigate the etymology, that is, the history and development of the scientific names of native plants in Leona Canyon.  We will talk about the history and fascinating stories that lie behind some of our most familiar vegetation, learn fundamentals in the study of etymology, and do fun activities using the woods and words.  Students will learn the ancient Greek alphabet, new vocabulary, and skills for spelling and word formation.   We’ll have discussions and do activities that link the ancient and modern languages and increase our appreciation for our language and environment.

Educator Bio

Michelle Plouse, one of our most recent additions to our team of Mentors & Masters, is a classicist who studies and teaches Ancient Greek and Latin Literature and History.  She has also extensively studied and researched the etymological connections between these ancient languages and English, specifically focusing on scientific etymology.  She has an incredible passion for language, history, and nature and loves opportunities to connect them.  Michelle is very excited about this workshop, which will be an excellent opportunity for students to investigate and think critically about our language while enhancing their understanding of natural history and biology.  This class will help all students increase their vocabulary and spelling skills.
